Is it necessary? No. Does it offer protection? It’s debatable. However, let’s be honest, it’s incredibly cheap and will prevent dust and dirt from entering the OBD port. If you’re ordering something else there’s no point not adding one to your basket. (Or more, as it’s a fairly standard product suitable for other cars.)
