Before You Buy a BYD OEM Dash Cam: Check Compatibility First

As BYD’s global sales continue to grow in recent years, more and more owners are looking to purchase genuine BYD dashcams. At the same time, we receive a large number of enquiries every day about the compatibility of genuine BYD dashcams with different vehicles.

In this article, we aim to help you understand the key factors that affect dashcam compatibility before making a purchase, so you can avoid buying a dashcam that is incompatible with your vehicle due to differences in specifications, model years, or connection interfaces.

Most people assume that if they drive a Sealion 6, they simply need a dash cam designed for the Sealion 6. It sounds logical, but in reality, the same vehicle model can have different wiring, connectors, and installation requirements depending on the model year, market version, and production batch. Your neighbor's Sealion 6 might work perfectly with a particular dash cam, but that doesn't guarantee the same dash cam will work with yours.

So, rather than offering a one-size-fits-all answer, this guide will help you understand what you actually need to check before placing an order.

Step 1: Check the Connector in Your Vehicle

Yes, this means physically checking your vehicle. It only takes a few minutes and could save you a lot of trouble later.

Locate the black housing behind your rearview mirror and carefully open it. Check whether there is an unused OEM connector inside.

If you find one, pay attention to three things:

  • The shape of the connector

  • The color of the connector

  • The pin configuration

The connector color can provide a useful initial clue. For example, white connectors are typically associated with the BYD Sealion 7 dash cam solution. Blue connectors are commonly found in some Sealion 6 / Seal U, Atto 3, Atto 2, Dolphin (MY2022–MY2024), and Seal EV (MY2022–MY2025) models.

However, here's the important part: connector color alone does not guarantee compatibility. You still need to confirm that the connector's actual shape, pin configuration, dash cam model, and vehicle wiring all match.

Step 2: Confirm the Exact Version of Your Vehicle

This is one of the steps people most often overlook, and it is a common cause of compatibility issues.

Let's take the BYD Seal EV as an example.

For MY2022–MY2025 models, the connector is usually round, and the corresponding dash cam model is EL-3776900.

For MY2026 models, the connector is typically square, and the dash cam model changes to SA5H-3776940.

If you choose a dash cam based only on the vehicle's model name or assumed model year, you could end up ordering the wrong one.

The MY2026 Seal EV has another important detail to be aware of: you need to manually start recording every time you start the vehicle. You can create a shortcut on your infotainment screen to make this easier, but it's worth knowing before you buy.

The Sealion 7 uses its own dedicated dash cam solution. The corresponding dash cam model is HC-3776940M, and the vehicle's infotainment system must be running software version V2503 or later.

It's also important to note that the European-market Sealion 7 is not compatible with this dash cam solution.

For the Atto 3, the European-market Atto 3 EVO is not compatible with this product due to differences in the infotainment head unit interface. For other versions, we recommend checking the actual connector and vehicle wiring before purchasing to confirm compatibility.

The Atto 2 follows a similar pattern: the European-market version is not compatible with this solution.

The Sealion 5 requires a slightly different approach.

First, check for an unused OEM connector behind the rearview mirror. If there isn't one, check the right-hand side of the infotainment head unit below the center console for a dedicated dash cam interface.

Once you locate the interface, take a clear photo and send it to us so we can help confirm compatibility.

Step 3: Find Out Whether You Need an Additional Cable

Not every vehicle comes with all the necessary dash cam wiring pre-installed.

  • If your vehicle already has the correct OEM connector, installation is usually relatively straightforward.

  • If your vehicle does not have the required connector, but your model is supported, you may need an additional connection cable or an alternative wiring method.

However, this is only possible if your vehicle supports the proposed installation method. Never force a connection or attempt unfamiliar wiring arrangements.

Installation: What You Shouldn't Overlook

If you plan to install the dash cam yourself, the following points are more than just general reminders. They are important for safety.

  • Don't force connectors. If the connector shape or pin configuration doesn't match, forcing it into place could damage the port.

  • Don't connect to an unknown power source. If you're unsure what a wire is for, don't connect it.

  • Keep cables clear of airbag deployment areas. Route all cables away from the paths where airbags deploy. This is particularly important for safety.

  • Test before reinstalling the trim panels. Make sure the dash cam powers on and records properly before putting everything back together. Otherwise, you may have to take everything apart again.

If you're not familiar with automotive electrical work or removing interior trim panels, we strongly recommend having the installation carried out by a qualified professional. The money saved by installing it yourself may not cover the repair costs if a connector is damaged.

No Image After Installation? Try This First

Sometimes, the problem isn't necessarily with the hardware.

Press and hold the volume button on your vehicle's infotainment system for approximately 10 seconds to restart the system. After restarting, check whether the DVR (dash cam) app is working again.

If the problem persists, contact us for further assistance.
